Don’t DIY Everything!

February 19, 2010 | 5K Weddings DIY, Author: Sonja, Centerpieces, Invitations, Low Cost Ideas, Receptions

Don’t DIY Everything!

There are different levels of the crafty and DIY that exists.  You have the beginner that is trying their hand in acquiring something additional to do in order to kill time.  Then you have your more advanced Do-It-Yourselfer that has perfected the art of creating their own goods or providing services.  This is the divide that creates a fine line between knowing when to say, “No!” to family, friends and others offering services.

In the last year, I’ve encountered numerous emails regarding Invites and Centerpieces; two largely DIY’d items.   When in doubt, just hire a Pro!  There are also retirees that charge less and list their services via SCORE, The Chamber of Commerce, and Economic Development Centers.

Here are a few quick tips when deciding whether to use a Pro or someone with more experience:

Invites ~ Save the Dates (STDs)

  1. Inkjet is out!  It smears, and looks dated.  Consider sending to a Professional Print Shop which sometimes may allow you to bring your own stationary!  When you consider the cost vs. the loss this is a great plus as you want to be sure you get it right the first time and avoid doing it over or sending out bad copies.  Another great option and commonly used today is the Laser Printers!  Say, “Goodbye” to the printed- it -yourself look and whispers behind your back.
  2. Know what you’re working with!  Dated fonts, graphics, and shady margins do not present a good look for your finished piece.  Think, “Will someone know I DIMS (Did-It-Myself)?”  If you’re answer is, “Yes!” then by all means redirect to someone with more experience, Pros, and those readily able to provide examples and/or a portfolio of finished items!  Why would you trust such important work to someone that claims to be able to accomplish the task?
  3. Provide the return postage!  You are already cutting corners!  What is 44 cents per person going to hurt?  “REALLY PEOPLE!”  If you are that concerned with the postage cost; opt for an online or e-invite.  You can also choose to have your responses sent via email or phone but, there is nothing better than having that card back in your hand.
  4. Don’t send out STDs and Invites at the same time?  Consider sending out your STD’s 4-6 months in advance and if you are planning a destination wedding 12 months.  When you decide to send them together this screams UNORGANIZED or CONFUSED!  The invite solidifies the date and lets your guest know the definitive date.

Centerpieces

  1. Keep it simple.  Too many colors, too many patterns, or over thinking can be the death of your piece.  Consider something sleek, classy, and timeless.  Trends are forever changing and what you come up with weeks-months before may not be what you are in the mood for, what represents the theme you have chosen, or even the season for that matter.  Low lights: candles, “bling“, mirrors Well Lit: Ornate Napkins, embellished fruit, vases   Those are just a few ideas.  You can make you final decision weeks before.  I like to eye a space first and look at the height of the ceiling, linens, colors of party, backdrop, and use it to compliment!  I like to have fun and make it UNIQUE to the couple.
  2. Consult a Florist!  Even if you D-I-Y your own floral.  Check the season of the flower!  Hydrangeas are beautiful!  I absolutely adore them when I think of floral.  But, they are not good in the sun, or high temps.  They droop easily and can become a nightmare to handle.  What an embarrassment…think pics!

Affordable Wedding Centerpiece – Submerged Flowers

October 15, 2009 | 5K Weddings DIY, Author: Leslie, Centerpieces

Having a lot of flowers on your wedding day adds a special charm that no other wedding decoration can replace. But if you’re on a tight budget, what can you do? Well, you can create the illusion of having a lot of flowers on your wedding day by using submerged flowers as your centerpiece.

All you will need is cylindrical vases, water, and a few flowers. Just submerge a few flowers in the vases and that’s it! You can even add a few pebbles at the bottom to achieve a ‘zen’ look.

As for which flowers to use, it’s really your choice as long as you use flowers that match your wedding colors. You can use the same flowers on all of the tables, or use a different one for each – just make sure your colors match!

*If i doubt ask your florist which flowers work best for your desired project.

Edible Centerpieces

July 31, 2009 | 5K Weddings DIY, Centerpieces

Instead of having the traditional flower arrangements as your centerpiece which usually comes expensive, a great low-budget alternative would be edible centerpieces. You can have cookies, mini-cupcakes, candies and fruits arranged attractively and invitingly for the guests. Aside from making the tables look festive, it will also provide delightful desserts to your guests. Here are some do-it-yourself edible centerpieces that would help you cut down your wedding expenses:

  • Fruits

Buy some fresh fruits, cut them or serve them directly. Place them inside a glass bowl, a wine glass, or a basket. If your caterer can arrange a centerpiece composed of fruits-on-a stick and wont charge you additional fees, then let them do the arrangement. If not, you can still do it yourself anyway.

lemon

  • Pastries and Sweets

Bake some cupcakes or mini-cakes, buy some simple sugar coated biscuits, or buy some sweet treats like candies, jelly beans or molded chocolates. But make sure to choose unbranded treats when buying because they come cheaper but basically tastes the same. Just be wise when picking the right treats. Or go to your reliable local bakery shops and buy from them. Remember, you can always bake them or make them yourself. Just look for simple recipe and do it yourself!

Try using different shapes of containers per table to amuse your guests. The fun part of having an edible centerpiece is that it will eventually keep your guests preoccupied while waiting for the program proper or while waiting for the meal to be served.

DIY – Centerpiece Ideas #1

January 23, 2009 | Author: Sonja, Centerpieces

Centerpiece Ideas#1

Centerpieces are a breeze with a little creativity and some “know-how”.  You can get inspired by visiting craft stores, independent merchants, and other places where centerpieces are sold.  Crate&Barrel, Storehouse and other stores along this line are full of centerpieces for all occasions.  You can open up any leading Bridal , Interior Decorating Magazines and come up with a one of a kind creation.

Nowadays Centerpieces can be one of the most costly items on your list so inviting a crafty friend to share their ideas or just simply doing it yourself you can create a lasting impression and keepsake for your guest.  Follow the simple tips and ideas below for creating your own centerpiece.

Tip # 1:  You’ve located your centerpiece, but it’s going to cost you $100 per table.  Well, take a mental or actual picture and keep it with you cause you’re going shopping!  Have in mind stores that sell pieces to your centerpiece or like objects at reasonable cost.  Shop for all the items that are needed to complete one (sample).  Be sure that the store(s) regularly stock what is needed for your centerpiece.  If you only see 1-3 objects to create your centerpiece it is best that you speak with the store personnel and find out the availability.  Make sure this isn’t just a seasonal or test product and that it will be around in the event you plan on going with your initial design and you need to make more.

Idea # 1:  Non Floral Arrangements

One of the most sought after non floral arrangements also doubles as a GREEN or ECO Friendly arrangement.  Notice those weddings with the branches flowing and towering off the tables?  Manzanita branches both natural and simulated run around $45 and up and that doesn’t cover shipping!  “Come one people!  What for…branches?”

A cost friendly alternative is regular branches.

Here is what you can do with regular branches:

  1. Leave as is
  2. Paint; incorporate the colors of your wedding or use this as a way to invite a 3rd color
  3. Add paper flowers, table numbers, crystals, small lanterns, or other items that say you
  4. Roll in glue or spray on glue and roll in beads, crystals or other embellishments

There are many possibilities and you can use your creativity to customize a design all yours!  Have fun!
