Fall/Autumn Season for Weddings

September 2, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Color, Flowers, Reception, Receptions

This season has to be my favorite when it comes to colors. I don’t think there is any other time when you see almost every tree bursting with spectacular colors of gold, deep red, yellow, orange, and deep purple. Since these are such bold and solid colors, you don’t need too much in terms of decorations and flowers since they stand out well even with just a few.

The wonderfully colored foliage to something to take advantage of since it saves you with decorations of your own. All you and your guests need to do is enjoy the beautiful and natural scenery or take what is already outdoors into your reception venue. There are also so many wonderful flowers in season during autumn that you won’t have a hard time looking for the right ones for you and you can also get them cheaper since they are in season.

The weather is perfect for outdoor activities as well, not too warm but not too cold either. If it gets nifty at night, you can always warm up with some delicious apple cider. The wedding flowers won’t be shriveling under the sun, the cake won’t start to melt early, the guests won’t be squirming in their clothes and sweating profusely, and you and your bridesmaids won’t be worrying that your make up is melting.

Homemade Iced Tea

August 29, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Backyard Weddings, Reception, Receptions

You can’t go wrong with some iced tea for your wedding reception beverage, especially served on a nice and warm summer afternoon.  Here’s a recipe for lemon iced tea that I found on www.healthy-temple.com that you might enjoy. This recipe yields four servings but you can easily adjust the quantity on the number of people you are serving it to.

I added some honey to mine to make it a bit sweeter instead of sugar but if you don’t have honey, sugar is perfectly fine.

Ingredients
4 lemon-flavored herbal tea bags
2 cups water
4 teaspoons sugar
4 cups ice cubes
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
4 slices lemon
4 mint sprigs

Cooking Instructions

1. Bring the water to a boil and remove from heat.
2. Place the tea bags in a large tea pot and pour the hot water over them. Cover and steep for 3 minutes.
3. Uncover the pot and remove the tea bags. Add the sugar and stir until the sugar dissolves.
4. Add the ice cubes to the tea and let cool. When the tea has cooled to room temperature, add the lemon juice. Transfer the tea to a pitcher, cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
5. When ready to serve, fill 4 tall glasses with ice. Fill the glasses with tea and garnish with a lemon slices and mint sprigs.

What’s On Your Playlist?

August 25, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Backyard Weddings, Reception, Receptions

Have you thought of the songs you’d like playing during your wedding celebration? You and your partner should also schedule a sit down for this as well so that your wedding playlist will be a combination of all the songs you both like and want to hear. After that, you can just download all the songs into your music player and let it play throughout the event.

Personally, I’m not into overly mushy love songs unless they have a special meaning or important memory attached to them and although hilarious, I know that some couples are not up to doing the chicken dance on their own wedding day. For receptions, I’d recommend some light and bouncy music to out everyone in a light and fun mood while they are talking and eating. You can save some romantic love songs for the dancing later, if you have that on the program.  If you and your partner have your “theme song,” there is no question about its inclusion, maybe for your first dance as a married couple.

If you’re looking for suggestions to add more to your playlist, here’s my two cent’s worth. Frank Sinatra songs are very popular choices and if you like his songs, you might also want to check out Michael BublĂ©. I personally like his song “Everything” and I think it’s perfect for a wedding celebration, a man describing what his partner is to him. Very romantic in a cool and upbeat tune. For those who like a more country feel for their playlists, Keith Urban is worth listening to. He has a wonderful combination of both slow and uptempo love songs that you can easily dance to. I even work out to some of his songs because they put me in such a good mood as I listen to them.

Easy Lemonade Recipe

August 20, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Backyard Weddings, Reception, Receptions

Another beverage suggestion for your backyard wedding reception. This very easy lemonade recipe is from allrecipes.

Ingredients

  • 4 lemons, juiced
  • 1 quart water
  • 1/2 cup white sugar

Directions

  1. In a 2 quart pitcher, combine the lemon juice, water and sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Chill in refrigerator.

This serves 4 to 5 people, although if I were one of your guests, I can easily consume quite a lot. You can add more sugar if you want your drink to turn out sweeter but I like it a bit tart myself.

More Thoughts on Backyard Weddings

August 19, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Backyard Weddings, Bridesmaids Dress, Reception, Receptions, Wedding Gowns, Wedding Shoes

I love the idea of backyard weddings because it gives everyone a more relaxed and laid back atmosphere than traditional church and garden weddings. Personally, when I receive wedding invitations, there are times when I roll my eyes and wonder if the bride really wanted to marry the groom or she just wanted to show everyone that she can spend exorbitant amounts of money for the whole shenanigan.

You don’t have to spend much on your wedding dress and your bridesmaids’ as well for backyard weddings. A nice and casual sun dress would be perfect and in tune with the whole feel, especially if you plan the wedding during the day or early afternoon. If you already have shoes you can wear with your dress, go ahead and wear them. You don’t have to buy new ones just for the occasion.

Daytime weddings are also great since you don’t have to spend on lighting and you don’t have to spend time and effort in setting them up. You have wonderfully bright and natural sunlight to light up your big day, courtesy of the great old sun right above us all. An added bonus is that you won’t have disgruntled neighbors losing their sleep because of the noise you are making.

Some people may find potluck wedding receptions tacky and distasteful but I think that aside from saving money, this gives everyone a chance to contribute and be proud to have helped make the celebration happen. I know I would be and the next time I get invited to one, I have a great pasta dish that was an instant hit when I served it last Christmas for our family reunion.

You can’t please everybody and there probably will be one or two guests (hopefully no more than that) who’s going to express disappointment or negative feelings about some part in your wedding celebration but just grin and shrug it off. Your wedding isn’t about your dress or your cake or the venue, it’s about you and your partner’s union.

I found this Guy Fieri recipe at www.familycircle.com

  • 1/3 cup pickle relish

Decorating Ideas

August 7, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Backyard Weddings, Reception, Receptions, Summer Weddings, Wedding Venues

Here are some things you might want to consider as decorations for your own backyard wedding celebration.

Christmas Lights

Dig in your Christmas box earlier than usual and use these to provide additional lighting to your wedding, especially if you plan on celebrating until dark. You can drape them on thick shrubs or wrap them around the lower branches of trees for a very romantic and charming effect. Just don’t go overboard and make sure not to arrange it as you would a Christmas tree.

Paper Lanterns

You can make your own or get them cheap at most stores. They are simple yet elegant decorations to have, both by day and night. They are available in different colors to match your wedding colors but even plain white ones are very dramatic, especially at night.

Potted Plants and Flowers

Add more color by using potted flowers and other decorative plants. You can even decorate the pots with ribbons that match your color scheme so that they will blend in with the other decorations. The best part is that they can easily be moved from one place to another and you can put them back in their original places as soon as you are done.

Backyard Barbeque Recipe

August 4, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Backyard Weddings, Reception, Receptions

For those planning a backyard barbeque theme, here is a wonderful recipe from the Food Network Magazine called Chili-Glazed Pork Ribs. Cooking time is three hours and this recipe serves six to eight people.

Ingredients:

  • 2 racks pork spareribs (about 6 pounds)
  • Kosher salt
  • 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme
  • 3 tablespoons ancho chili powder
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 3 cups apple cider
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Procedure:

Make shallow cuts between the ribs on the bone side with a sharp knife, piercing just the membrane.

Mix 1 tablespoon salt, the brown sugar, garlic, thyme, chili powder, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper and the cayenne in a bowl. Rub the spice mixture evenly over the ribs. Place the ribs on a rack in a roasting pan, loosely cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.

Meanwhile, combine the cider, ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire sauce in a saucepan over medium heat and simmer until reduced to about 2 cups, about 30 minutes. Cover and set aside.

Preheat a grill to low heat on one side. Cook the ribs bone-side down on the cooler side of the grill, covered, until tender, about 2 hours 30 minutes. (If using a charcoal grill, add more charcoal as needed to maintain the temperature.) Continue to cook, uncovering every 10 minutes to baste with the sauce, until the ribs are glazed, about 40 more minutes. Remove from the grill and cut into pieces.
