Guest Seating at your Reception

March 9, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Receptions

The guests’ seating arrangement at your reception is an important part of the whole celebration itself. You have to make sure that your guests will feel comfortable and enjoy themselves so knowing which people you can put together and those you need to keep apart is essential in making everyone happy.

First, you need to determine how many tables you will require for your reception. You can either have the management of the reception venue to provide you with a chart of the floor plan and the number of people to be seated at each table.

After that, some major brainstorming from you and your spouse. You should be able to know what your guests’ likes and dislikes are; who will most likely click being seated at the same table and who will not. Old friends or classmates that have not seen each other for a long time are good people to seat together at a table. There will surely be a lot of reminiscing and catching up happening between them. People with similar interests are also great to group together at a table. The same goes to people within the same age bracket. Young children are an exception; they need to be seated next to their parents or guardians. This way, no one will feel uncomfortable and out of place.

You will want any divorced couples seated far from each other especially if they are not on good terms. You might also want to seat friends or family members who are not on the best of terms with each other or run the risk of an argument in the middle of your reception.

Don’t DIY Everything!

February 19, 2010 | 5K Weddings DIY, Author: Sonja, Centerpieces, Invitations, Low Cost Ideas, Receptions

Don’t DIY Everything!

There are different levels of the crafty and DIY that exists.  You have the beginner that is trying their hand in acquiring something additional to do in order to kill time.  Then you have your more advanced Do-It-Yourselfer that has perfected the art of creating their own goods or providing services.  This is the divide that creates a fine line between knowing when to say, “No!” to family, friends and others offering services.

In the last year, I’ve encountered numerous emails regarding Invites and Centerpieces; two largely DIY’d items.   When in doubt, just hire a Pro!  There are also retirees that charge less and list their services via SCORE, The Chamber of Commerce, and Economic Development Centers.

Here are a few quick tips when deciding whether to use a Pro or someone with more experience:

Invites ~ Save the Dates (STDs)

  1. Inkjet is out!  It smears, and looks dated.  Consider sending to a Professional Print Shop which sometimes may allow you to bring your own stationary!  When you consider the cost vs. the loss this is a great plus as you want to be sure you get it right the first time and avoid doing it over or sending out bad copies.  Another great option and commonly used today is the Laser Printers!  Say, “Goodbye” to the printed- it -yourself look and whispers behind your back.
  2. Know what you’re working with!  Dated fonts, graphics, and shady margins do not present a good look for your finished piece.  Think, “Will someone know I DIMS (Did-It-Myself)?”  If you’re answer is, “Yes!” then by all means redirect to someone with more experience, Pros, and those readily able to provide examples and/or a portfolio of finished items!  Why would you trust such important work to someone that claims to be able to accomplish the task?
  3. Provide the return postage!  You are already cutting corners!  What is 44 cents per person going to hurt?  “REALLY PEOPLE!”  If you are that concerned with the postage cost; opt for an online or e-invite.  You can also choose to have your responses sent via email or phone but, there is nothing better than having that card back in your hand.
  4. Don’t send out STDs and Invites at the same time?  Consider sending out your STD’s 4-6 months in advance and if you are planning a destination wedding 12 months.  When you decide to send them together this screams UNORGANIZED or CONFUSED!  The invite solidifies the date and lets your guest know the definitive date.

Centerpieces

  1. Keep it simple.  Too many colors, too many patterns, or over thinking can be the death of your piece.  Consider something sleek, classy, and timeless.  Trends are forever changing and what you come up with weeks-months before may not be what you are in the mood for, what represents the theme you have chosen, or even the season for that matter.  Low lights: candles, “bling“, mirrors Well Lit: Ornate Napkins, embellished fruit, vases   Those are just a few ideas.  You can make you final decision weeks before.  I like to eye a space first and look at the height of the ceiling, linens, colors of party, backdrop, and use it to compliment!  I like to have fun and make it UNIQUE to the couple.
  2. Consult a Florist!  Even if you D-I-Y your own floral.  Check the season of the flower!  Hydrangeas are beautiful!  I absolutely adore them when I think of floral.  But, they are not good in the sun, or high temps.  They droop easily and can become a nightmare to handle.  What an embarrassment…think pics!

If you’re in the lookout for ways to decorating your wedding reception venue without spending too much money, Martha Stewart Weddings has a great idea on just how you can do so.

The idea is to use wrapping paper as a table runner as you can see on the image to the left. Just make sure you use and choose wrapping paper that complements your wedding theme and for added effect, use the same wrapping paper for your DIY wedding favors. This will give your table a very polished look without costing too much.

A Smart Wedding Reception Idea

November 11, 2009 | Author: Leslie, Receptions

If you’re tight on a budget but want to have a fun and beautiful wedding ceremony, you can actually save a lot of money on your wedding reception – often regarded as the most expensive part of any wedding.

If you followed our previous tip on how you can save money on your wedding by reducing your guest list, you’re on the right track. You can ask your close friends and family members to pitch in on your wedding day by having a potluck reception. This is a very good way to save money as you won’t need to hire a caterer for the food, and your guests can help themselves to the food around them.

If you’re having a themed wedding ceremony, you can always ask your guests to bring certain type of food that match your theme. And since your friends and family members were the one who cooked your meals, it will certainly be more special and memorable. Enjoy!

Affordable Beach Wedding Reception Ideas

July 26, 2009 | Low Cost Ideas, Receptions, Uncategorized

A lot of couples who go for beach weddings often choose an indoor reception. Here are some affordable ideas for beach wedding receptions that will help you save on costs:

  • A park or natural reserve. There are a lot of parks that have picnic shelters that can be booked for special events. Some shelters are usually free, or if not, are available for a small cost.
  • Beside the pool.  Have your wedding reception at the poolside in your hotel or resort for an informal but intimate reception area.
  • Choose a church that is near a beach so that the reception can be held there as well, usually for a nominal fee.
  • Search for companies that offer booze cruises, which is a chartered boat that can take your guests on a cruise for your reception. There are several meal options you can book for your guests like a sunset dinner or dessert and coffee. Who wouldn’t love a cruise?!
  • If the beach has a volleyball or tennis court, book them in advance and have your reception there. Get your imagination working and have the court looking fabulous in no time.

Give it a Twist!

July 11, 2009 | Reception, Receptions, Uncategorized

JustMarried Sandals

I saw a feature before about a celebrity wedding. The ceremony was simple with minimal guests. Elegant floral arrangements with white-green-light yellow theme gave out a fresh summer feeling to both the guests and the viewers as well. The simplicity was its best decor.

The wedding ceremony was done in the morning, at around 8-10. It was brief but the whole wedding celebration ate up the entire day and the reception was done in the evening. The couple shared a sense of humor and wanted to treat their guest with a little “something something”. After a solemn ceremony came the fun part: the way to the reception.

The guests have no idea where the reception will be held. The invitation did not include any specific details but only informed the guests that the occasion is a whole day affair and that they were to wear comfortable clothes after the wedding. So after the wedding ceremony, the ushers gave each guest one slipper which contains the location of the reception as well as the direction as to how to get there. Upon arriving at the reception venue, these guests were required to find the other pair of their slippers (clues were also given out together with the first slipper). The venue was held at a white beach front. Slippers where cleverly hidden and the guests were also given enough time to explore and appreciate the island (since the reception was set to evening). Once they were done, they were asked to use them during the whole duration of the reception. These slippers also served as their give-away to their guest.

I’ll definitely do something like this once I get married. I’ll make sure that all our guests will also feel the excitement and happiness by actually being part of the wedding celebration activities. And why not include a lot of twist along the way? Like adding additional stop-overs for the guests before finally figuring out where the exact location is. Like a treasure hunt! But this stop-overs should provide them with exciting activities, games and the likes. For example, on the first destination, a photo booth awaits them with costumes and wigs, and they are to take a picture of themselves. Once they’re finish with the task, second clue will the be provided. On the second destination, let the guests have a taste of both you and your husband’s favorite cupcake or drink of your favorite wine. Be creative and people would never forget about your wedding day. You don’t need to rent for additional venues. A simple part in a park would do. If you were able to purchase your own house, host one stop-over in there. It’s also a way of showing your guests as to where you would be settling in. Other locations that I could think of are your university or school (if it’s just near), A relatives or friend’s establishment, or any other locations that both you and your husband have something connected with. Be resourceful and you can actually get a lot of cheap ideas.
