Guest Seating at your Reception

March 9, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Receptions

The guests’ seating arrangement at your reception is an important part of the whole celebration itself. You have to make sure that your guests will feel comfortable and enjoy themselves so knowing which people you can put together and those you need to keep apart is essential in making everyone happy.

First, you need to determine how many tables you will require for your reception. You can either have the management of the reception venue to provide you with a chart of the floor plan and the number of people to be seated at each table.

After that, some major brainstorming from you and your spouse. You should be able to know what your guests’ likes and dislikes are; who will most likely click being seated at the same table and who will not. Old friends or classmates that have not seen each other for a long time are good people to seat together at a table. There will surely be a lot of reminiscing and catching up happening between them. People with similar interests are also great to group together at a table. The same goes to people within the same age bracket. Young children are an exception; they need to be seated next to their parents or guardians. This way, no one will feel uncomfortable and out of place.

You will want any divorced couples seated far from each other especially if they are not on good terms. You might also want to seat friends or family members who are not on the best of terms with each other or run the risk of an argument in the middle of your reception.

The Guest List

March 8, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Guest Book, Where to Start

Making the guest list can be stressful to many couples planning their wedding. To make it easier, here are important questions to ask yourself.

Are you going for a small intimate ceremony or a large loud one?  When you know the answer, you know how long your guest list should be.

How much are you willing to spend? A lot of guests equals to a lot of money needed. Caterers usually charge per head so you have to trim down your guest list if you are operating on a tight budget.

Will they be able to make it? The date of the wedding should also influence the guest list. Some may be able to attend while some may not.

Where is the wedding and reception going to be held? If for example, you are planning a destination wedding, the distance will be a considerable factor to some of your guests. In addition, you need to know how many people can be accommodated in your venue. The venue can only hold a certain number of people, exceed that and some may have problems with seating.

Wedding Hairstyles

March 7, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Hair

Have you picked out how you’ll be wearing your hair on the big day? No? Check out these helpful tips.

Decide if you’re going to wear your hair long, medium length, or short. When you pick how long or short you want your hair to be, it will be easier to think of the possible styles appropriate for the length.

Hopefully by this time, you already have your wedding dress and veil. Browse through bridal magazines and pick out which you like and think would work with your gown. The veil and the hair should also work together.

Have more than one choice for your hairstylist. Set consultation dates, inform them of what you like and don’t, show them a picture of your wedding dress and ask for their own input, try some hairstyles you had picked from magazines, and find which one would work best with you from there.

If you have decided on the hairstylist, it’s time to decide on the hairstyle. If you are going for a drastic change, you should make it well before the actual wedding day. This way you have time to adjust and get used to it and work any kinks that might come up.

Thank You Cards

March 6, 2010 | Author: Leslie

Sending out thank you cards to people who had given you and your spouse wedding gifts is an appropriate and very sincere way to express your appreciation. Make sure they are personalized, written individually and by hand. This might be a long task to complete but consider it well worth the effort when you imagine how touched the recipients will be when they read your card. It is considered bad taste to send out machine printed and generic thank you cards, making the person you sent the card to feel they and their gift did not merit a personal effort from you.

Here are some good examples you may be able to get inspiration from.

My dearest Jessie,

Joel and I absolutely love the cookware set you gave us. I gave the non-stick frying pan the honor of cooking our very first pancake as husband and wife. I’m looking forward to cooking with the rest.

Thank you!

Hope to have lunch with you soon,

Ann

Dear Aunt Joy,

The crystal cake pedestal is so exquisite. I couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful one. Hopefully by your next visit, I’ll have a cake displayed on it that we can share.

Love you,

Leah

Place Card Holders

March 5, 2010 | Adorable Affordable Finds, Author: Leslie

I came across this snowflake place card holder at www.favorfavor.com. They’re great for winter themed weddings.

They’re priced at $0.99 each, with a minimum order of 30 pieces. Each order contains different snowflake designs with rhinestone accents and stand at 5”.  Blank place cards also with a winter theme design are included in the order. If you don’t want to use the place cards, you can substitute them with the guests’ pictures instead, with their names and table number at the back. It will be quite fun to watch your guests looking to find their places at the reception. It can actually be a conversation starter around the table. These snowflake card holders can also double up as your wedding favors as well. They’re quite practical and can work as picture or notes holder on a table or desk in the house after the celebration. Now that’s great value for your money.

Wedding Cake Origins

March 3, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Cakes!

The tradition of the wedding cake originated from ancient Romans. They originally had the bride and groom eat a loaf of bread, usually from wheat or barley during the celebration. The groom would later break the cake over the bride’s head. It was supposed to symbolize the groom’s breaking of his bride’s hymen and his domination over her. Thankfully, the breaking of the bread over the bride’s head part did not carry on to the present.

In 1840, England’s Queen Victoria later made lavish improvements in her own wedding cake. Queen Victoria’s version is what still survives to this day. It had several layers and decorated with white icing, quite an impressive upgrade from its early Roman beginnings.

As for the wedding cake topper, no one really knows for sure. The most popular story tells of a baker’s daughter who requested her father to make a symbol of the love between her and her future husband. In answer to her request, the father made two miniature figurines representing the couple and placed them on top of their wedding cake.

Wedding Colors for 2010

March 2, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Color, Where to Start

In keeping up to date with the trends, fashion authorities have decreed that brighter colors are in rage among bridal accessories. Instead of an all white look, go for splashes of pink or red on your gown with fabric flowers. If you are not into any frills, a simple but colorful sash or ribbon tied at your waist will do the trick.

Jewelry in varying colors is also a good idea. Hairpieces adorned with off white pearls will serve dual purposes. If you liked Sarah Jessica Parker’s feathered headpiece in the Sex in the City movie, you could go with something similar, maybe with the same color as your motif. You can also have your bridesmaids in different dress colors.

Going for colorful shoes add a little extra while you are walking down the aisle. Picture the tips of your shoes peeking out with their bright colors with every step you make. Your groom and your guests’ eyes will be pleasurably surprised for sure.

Believe It or Not

March 1, 2010 | Author: Leslie

Here are some wedding superstitions I’ve heard over time. I guess there’s no harm bearing them in mind.

  • In England, it is believed that a spider in your wedding dress means good luck.
  • An old English rhyme goes:

Married in White, you have chosen right,

Married in Blue, your love will always be true,

Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,

Married in Brown, you will live in town,

Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,

Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,

Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,

Married in Pink, your spirit will sink,

Married in Grey, you will go far away,

Married in Black, you will wish yourself back.

It’s mostly self explanatory, really. The green color is supposed to be connected to promiscuity, hence “ashamed to be seen.”

  • Bridesmaids are dressed similarly as the bride to act as decoys to protect the bride from evil spirits. The bride’s veil is also said to shield from malevolent spirits as well. (It’s like wedding armor, don’t you think?)

What to Ask Your Florist

January 27, 2010 | Author: Leslie

Who has ever attended a wedding without flowers? I would say no one. Flowers are an important part of the ceremony and choosing the right florist who will have your best interests at heart is the key.

Like any good job interview, you should have a set of questions to ask prospective florists before you settle on the best one. Here are some:

  • How long have you been in this business?
  • Do you have samples of work that I can see?
  • How much do your services cost? Is there a required deposit?
  • What are your own ideas?
  • Will you be doing other weddings the same time as mine?
  • I have this for my budget. Can you work around this? (Ask for some money saving ideas like seasonal flowers or special packages)
  • How long do you need to work on all the flower arrangements?
  • Do you also provide rental accessories like candles, candlestick holders, aisle runners, vases, potted plants, etc. that might be needed? How and when will you pick up the rentals?
  • Will you deliver the flowers and arrange them on site to ensure everything is in its proper arrangement?
  • Do you preserve bouquets after the wedding?
