How to make Wedding Invitations

May 9, 2010 | 5K Weddings DIY, Author: Leslie, Invitations, wedding invitations

I’ve found another great instructional video on youtube, this time about making your own wedding invitations. I chose this one to show because of the elegant yet simple design of the invite and it is very easy to do.

I also like the tape gun the woman uses to put all the pieces together but you can just use glue or paste and it will do an equally nice job.

If you are buying envelopes instead of making your own, I suggest you do that first before making the invitations so you know if they will fit inside. You can skip the envelope lining part if you’d like, especially if you do not have much left over decorative paper and it will not add weight to the invitations so that you can save on postage later.

More Green Wedding Tips

April 23, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Guests, Invitations, Wedding Venues, green wedding

You cannot have too many tips when it comes to your wedding and saving the environment at the same time.

  • When choosing a venue, consider where you and most of your wedding guests will be coming from and see if you can find a location that will not require long travel or commute.
  • Downsize the wedding party; there is really no need for many bridesmaids.
  • Limit your guests to important and close relatives and friends; do not feel you have to invite everyone you know or all your co-workers. This will help you cut down on expenses on food, drinks, and decorations.
  • If you can consider skipping on some traditions, go for paperless invitations. Make a list of the people you are inviting to the wedding and their contact details. Email those with available addresses and ask them to reply or personally call up those whose numbers you have. Ask help from family members or friends for this task.

Save on your wedding invitations

March 10, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Invitations

Your wedding invitation costs should not take up more of your budget than is necessary. Remember that thicker paper costs more than regular or lighter ones. Colored paper and those with extra designs printed on them are more expensive than those that are simple and plain. Other color inks and graphics will also add to your bill. And if you do not want to choose from any available designs and want to go with your own custom made one, that will cost more, too. You will also need to consider postage for your invitation as well as postage for your wedding reply cards.

Try to save money by going for just one color for your invitation paper and the print. Keep everything simple, both with the paper and the text inside. The lighter the paper, the less you will have to pay for postage. Try not to go overboard with inserts. I went to a wedding once that had the name of the wedding coordinator on the invite. The instruction was to call up that person and verbally confirm if I was going to attend or not. Not traditional but it saved on extra paper and postage.

Don’t DIY Everything!

February 19, 2010 | 5K Weddings DIY, Author: Sonja, Centerpieces, Invitations, Low Cost Ideas, Receptions

Don’t DIY Everything!

There are different levels of the crafty and DIY that exists.  You have the beginner that is trying their hand in acquiring something additional to do in order to kill time.  Then you have your more advanced Do-It-Yourselfer that has perfected the art of creating their own goods or providing services.  This is the divide that creates a fine line between knowing when to say, “No!” to family, friends and others offering services.

In the last year, I’ve encountered numerous emails regarding Invites and Centerpieces; two largely DIY’d items.   When in doubt, just hire a Pro!  There are also retirees that charge less and list their services via SCORE, The Chamber of Commerce, and Economic Development Centers.

Here are a few quick tips when deciding whether to use a Pro or someone with more experience:

Invites ~ Save the Dates (STDs)

  1. Inkjet is out!  It smears, and looks dated.  Consider sending to a Professional Print Shop which sometimes may allow you to bring your own stationary!  When you consider the cost vs. the loss this is a great plus as you want to be sure you get it right the first time and avoid doing it over or sending out bad copies.  Another great option and commonly used today is the Laser Printers!  Say, “Goodbye” to the printed- it -yourself look and whispers behind your back.
  2. Know what you’re working with!  Dated fonts, graphics, and shady margins do not present a good look for your finished piece.  Think, “Will someone know I DIMS (Did-It-Myself)?”  If you’re answer is, “Yes!” then by all means redirect to someone with more experience, Pros, and those readily able to provide examples and/or a portfolio of finished items!  Why would you trust such important work to someone that claims to be able to accomplish the task?
  3. Provide the return postage!  You are already cutting corners!  What is 44 cents per person going to hurt?  “REALLY PEOPLE!”  If you are that concerned with the postage cost; opt for an online or e-invite.  You can also choose to have your responses sent via email or phone but, there is nothing better than having that card back in your hand.
  4. Don’t send out STDs and Invites at the same time?  Consider sending out your STD’s 4-6 months in advance and if you are planning a destination wedding 12 months.  When you decide to send them together this screams UNORGANIZED or CONFUSED!  The invite solidifies the date and lets your guest know the definitive date.

Centerpieces

  1. Keep it simple.  Too many colors, too many patterns, or over thinking can be the death of your piece.  Consider something sleek, classy, and timeless.  Trends are forever changing and what you come up with weeks-months before may not be what you are in the mood for, what represents the theme you have chosen, or even the season for that matter.  Low lights: candles, “bling“, mirrors Well Lit: Ornate Napkins, embellished fruit, vases   Those are just a few ideas.  You can make you final decision weeks before.  I like to eye a space first and look at the height of the ceiling, linens, colors of party, backdrop, and use it to compliment!  I like to have fun and make it UNIQUE to the couple.
  2. Consult a Florist!  Even if you D-I-Y your own floral.  Check the season of the flower!  Hydrangeas are beautiful!  I absolutely adore them when I think of floral.  But, they are not good in the sun, or high temps.  They droop easily and can become a nightmare to handle.  What an embarrassment…think pics!

Great Ways to Save on Wedding Invitations

November 23, 2009 | 5K Weddings DIY, Invitations

If you decided to make your own wedding invitations to save money, here are other great ways to save on your wedding invitations:

  • Shop around. So OK, I understand. You found this fabulous stationery that you just have to have. But look at other stationery shops first as other shops may be selling a similar piece for less the price.
  • Keep the design simple. Choose a simple and classic design for your wedding invitation and ideally, choose the color that matches your wedding theme. The more colors, images, and graphics you add, the more it adds up to the cost as well.
  • Keep it light! If you’re going to mail those invitations, better make sure that they don’t weigh too much else that’s another cost when it comes to postage. If the design you have in mind just weighs too much, try to replicate it using lighter paper and less frills.
  • Square is in. A lot of brides to be are not aware that irregulary shaped invitations actually cost more when mailed. So, try to stick to a square shaped design that fits in most regular envelopes.

So there you have it! By keeping things like your wedding invitation simple yet elegant, the money you’ll save from printing and sending them out can be used for other more important things, like the venue and the reception food.

Wedding Invitation Templates

August 1, 2009 | Invitations

The initial and perhaps the most important preparation for a wedding event is the invitations. It represents the the couple and the wedding theme thus every detail of it is critical. This includes the template, the presentation, and the wordings. As much as we want to splurge on wedding invitations, if we are on a tight budget, we can still opt to have one that is as elegant as those we see in magazines, the Internet or in any wedding services that we can find.

One way to cut down expenses it to have the diy your invites. All you have to do is find a good paper, a nice printer and an invitation layout or template. For the wedding invitation templates, you can either imitate one or create one that would embody the whole wedding motif that you have in mind. Another quick way is to download free templates from the net and all you have to do is fill in the required entries, make some modifications and you’re ready to print. I found this site that offers down loadable wedding invitation templates that I see helpful to brides who choose to make their own invitations by themselves.
