More Budget Friendly Tips

August 24, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Money Wasters, Setting a budget, Unexpected expenses

- Write everything down. It’s easier to keep track of things when you can actually see the figures instead of working them in your head. They’re like credit card statements, you get the full force of your expenses after you’d seen the monthly statement but not while you are shopping and swiping that credit card.

- Always aim lower than your set budget.  Don’t think that because you have a certain amount to spend on one item, you can go look for those that are exactly that amount. You might be surprised to find out that you can find what you need for lower or even half the price if you just put some effort into searching. You can also direct the money saved to other things if needed.

- Avoid temptation. I cannot remember where I heard this piece of restaurant menu advice from but it goes like this, “If you can’t pronounce it, you can’t afford it.” When shopping around for vendors and other wedding items, you should already have a general idea which are out of your budget range and which are workable. Don’t go “window shopping” and then agonize over something you saw that you suddenly decided you cannot get married without.

Staying within your budget

August 23, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Planning, Setting a budget

- When shopping around for vendors, go straight to the point. Don’t waste valuable time emailing or calling back and forth and end up going to another vendor for their services since you did not agree with their quote. Ask vendors upfront and tell them this is your budget and if they can work with it, if they cannot, move on to the next one. You save yourself and the vendor time and effort and you do not lead them on thinking you will hire them because of the long communication.

- Prioritize and determine which aspects and items you absolutely must have and what you can do without. These may vary from one couple to the next so it is a good idea to sit down with your partner and discuss these things first. You will also determine which part of the wedding celebration will take up most of your budget and all the others that follow.

- It’s what you think that counts and everyone else should be secondary. How often do we hear people asking “But what would Aunt so and so say about that?” Don’t be forced to choose or include something you do not really want just because you are afraid your guests will probably say something bad about your wedding. If they are helping to pay for it, that’s fine. But if not, you shouldn’t make the opinion of others the determining factor.

Say Yes to the Dress? Nah

August 21, 2010 | Author: Sonja, Setting a budget, Wedding Gowns

Okay, this is the point where I step on a great deal of toes and make brides very uncomfortable which is something I would never aim to do.  But seriously, why bust your budget especially when you are working with $1500?

A sexy, elegant, dramatic…you name it dress doesn’t have to be priced at $5000 to be the dress!  Whoever said that quality is in a price tag was only partially correct.  Price tags can be misleading especially when you are dealing with famous dressmakers and bridal salons.

There are several things to look for to determine quality, and price tag isn’t it e.g. cut, material, fit, embellishments to name a few.  If you are shopping by the price tag then you should consider having a consultant that specializes in the area shop with you.  What I really don’t understand is why a consultant would not respect the bride stating that she is working with a specific budget.

Bottom line brides, “Don’t enter into debt or inconvenience mom and dad.  Stick to your budget and shop smart.  You’re future self will thank you for it.”

How to Begin your Wedding Budget

April 24, 2010 | Author: Leslie, Setting a budget

To plan your wedding, the first step is to set a budget for it. For this, a serious sit-down with your affianced one is needed to talk money. Determine what kind of wedding you would like to have. Both of you also need to find out how much money you have that you are willing to spend on your wedding.

Do you have the savings to shoulder all the expenses yourself? If you do not, the wedding could take awhile before happening. There are couples who have long engagements to build up their savings for this reason. You will need to talk about how much money to set aside from your monthly salaries and decide if you need to cut back on certain areas of your lifestyle to raise the money.

You can also ask both of your families if they would like to contribute to the wedding. When parents learn about your wedding plans, they will usually offer to pay for something in particular such as the catering or the invitations as their wedding present for the couple.

When you have settled this, you have settled one major aspect in the whole process and ready to tackle the next one.

7 Great Money Saving Ideas for Your Wedding

December 3, 2009 | 5K Wedding Reality Articles, Author: Leslie, Setting a budget

Planning your wedding? Here are some great money saving ideas to make your wedding as fabulous as you dreamed it to be without busting your savings account.

1. Push your wedding date as far back as possible. In this way, you’ll have more time to plan and prepare for your wedding including all of the small details.

2. Have a wedding budget and stick to it. Don’t overspend.

3. Find out what you already have by doing an inventory. In this way, you’ll have a clear idea of what you need and don’t need to buy.

4. Hit two birds with one stone by having the wedding and the reception at the same place if you’re not having a church wedding.

5. Borrow what you can so that you’ll only buy the things you really need to. Most of the things you’ll buy for your wedding you’ll only get to use once, so borrow what you can to cut on costs.

6. Plan you wedding during the off season months, preferably November through March. Wedding items cost less during these times as not a lot of people get wed during these months. Remember the law of supply and demand? It also applies for wedding needs.

7. Employ the help of family and friends to save on wedding costs. Your brother’s cover band could be in charge of the music, and your crafty best friend can help you with the flowers or other decorations.

Great Advice on your Wedding Budget

November 13, 2009 | 5K Wedding Reality Articles, Author: Leslie, Setting a budget

Planning a wedding can be stressful and hard. If planned carefully even with a limited budget, you can have a beautiful wedding that you and your spouse will cherish for a lifetime.

Here are some useful tips when planning for your wedding budget:

1. Determine where the money to be spent for your wedding will come from. Will it be you who will pay for the wedding? Your parents? Or are the parents of your spouse and your spouse as well are going to chip in? The sooner you settle where the money will come from and how much they can shell out, the sooner you can make realistic plans for your wedding and avoid any awkward moments and arguments when it comes to money matters.

2. Make a list of must haves and settle those first. Find out what you need for the wedding and settle the most important ones first. Other items you can get away with borrowing, do so. Some couples find themselves with lots of stuff used after their wedding sitting in their attic, never to be used again.

3. Keep track of your expenses. Make sure to list everything that you’ve bought, or if you have a computer, make a spreadsheet of all your expenses so its easier to keep track where the money is going.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask help. If you’re not too good at handling money, ask a friend’s help. Shop around and see what deals you and your friend can get.

Just remember to always keep your options open and don’t buy on impulse – make it a habit to check out other stores and see what their prices are. You’ll  be surprised how the prices of one store may be totally different from the other.

5k Weddings Interview with Writer Tracy E. Hopkins

April 10, 2009 | 5K Wedding Reality Articles, Author: Sonja, Interviews With Real 5k Budget Brides

Tracy E. HopkinsWhen Lifestyle and Entertainment Journalist Tracy E. Hopkins of Brooklyn, NY agreed to an interview with 5k Weddings I was simply stunned.  Tracy’s original wedding story is featured here.  While many are still debating if a 5k wedding is for them or not we’ve interviewed this bride that has no regrets!
An email interview with Tracy E. Hopkins

5k Weddings: Tracy, what was your wedding budget?

Tracy E. Hopkins: 5K

5KW:  What exactly did your budget cover?

TEH: We spent $4722 on the wedding, which included my dress which I found on Ebay for $27; my husband’s suit; our rings; the ceremony location at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and a violinist who played during the
ceremony; an afternoon reception at Madiba, a South African restaurant in Brooklyn; the wedding cupcakes; wedding officiant; transportation; and wedding photos.

5KW:  Was the honeymoon/ vacation included in the 5k budget?

TEH:  I didn’t factor the honeymoon into the $5k budget, but when you add in our relaxing four-night honeymoon on Grand Bahama Island (Expedia was offering a $200 off special for the Bahamas), the total came to just
over $5K.

5KW:  Where were you married?

TEH: The Brooklyn Botanic Garden at the Japanese Hill and Pond Garden.  From 9-10 am on weekends, before the Garden opens to the public you can reserve several locations in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for $350 for
up to 50 guests.

5KW:  Was anything connected to your wedding DIY, and if so; what?

TEH:  Pretty much everything was DIY.  I didn’t use a wedding planner.  I did my own makeup with a little touch-up from my aunt.  But from a real DIY standpoint, we had a family friend make the guest wedding favors using
a box of Jordan almonds I purchased online, left over taffeta, and name tags we made ourselves.  We also printed our own invitations using an invitation kit from Party City.  And my matron of honor surprised me by making my bouquet using a dozen long-stem white roses, white ribbon, and super glue.

5KW:   What have you done with your dress? e.g. preserved, sold it, etc.
TEH:  I had my dress dry cleaned and it’s hanging in my closet.  I may have it shortened so I can wear it again to a formal affair or save it for when I have a daughter.

5KW: What is the one thing you wish you had done different?

TEH:The only snafu was that the car service we arranged to pick me up from the hotel either didn’t show up or took another passenger.  So I had to scramble at the very last minute to get another car service, which made
me 15 minutes late to my own wedding!  So if I could do it over, I would have splurged on a limo pickup.

5KW:  What was the most enjoyable part of your wedding day?  e.g. cutting the cake, the first dance, toast?

TEH:  Seeing how happy friends and family were for us made us happy.  The whole day was better than we could have ever imagined. The ceremony location and the restaurant reception were perfect.  And I will always cherish my dance with my Dad to Luther Vandross’ “The Glow of Love.”

5KW: What advice do you have for brides on a 5k budget?

TEH: Don’t let the wedding industry bully you into over spending.  It’s your day and you can do it your way.  Pick the ceremony, reception, and dress that suit your personality.  And just because you don’t spend $30,000 doesn’t mean your wedding has to look inexpensive.

5KW:  That said, Thank you Tracy!

Tracy, the editor of Hot Mama Daily possesses 16 years experience in journalism and has contributed to Essence Magazine,  The Associated Press,  The New York Daily News, and SheKnows.com.  Her story about her own 5k budget wedding is featured in The NY Daily News, and details her very own $5000 or less budget.  For those that may not think that this is possible; look no further.  You can read Tracy E. Hopkins complete story at: http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/weddings/2008/09/21/2008-09-21_the_4722_wedding_one_brooklyn_bride_prov.html

Wedding Gowns

January 26, 2009 | Author: Sonja, Mistakes I Made, Setting a budget, Wedding Gowns

The Mistake(s) I Made

This is one area that everyone seems to have similar issues and months of burden.  I for one changed my dress about 3 times before deciding on the gown that was right for me.  My first gown was ordered off of the internet and cost roughly $295 with shipping and handling.  It now sits in the bag it was shipped in.  My second dress was exchanged at the cash register during checkout and I went with another design!  None of the previous eight dresses that I tried on or the one, I had purchased and purposefully left at home nor the one I had partially purchased and then exchanged at the register during my fitting grabbed me like the one I wore during my vow renewal.  It was lace, it had beads, it was strapless, and it flattered my figure!  Simply put, “It was awesome!”  It screamed, “Sonja!” and I knew it was the one for me.  My husband was sold the minute I stepped out of the fitting room.  Did, I say that everything was right?  “That’s right, even the length was perfect!”  After the bust was taken in and the bra cups added I thought I would be on my way…Not!  The last thing I had to have added was the bustle, then the  last alteration was the waist due to my extremely large…well that’s another story in itself.  One that got a little costly once the changes were marked.

After spending about $200 on alterations for a under $500 gown I was a little angry, but you have to make mistakes to learn from them.  Now I get to share with you all what I learned; the hard way!

What I learned from:

Mistake #1

Don’t order a gown off the internet unless you have a professional seamstress measure you!

Ladies, you know those size proportions you always loose sanity over?  Well, if you were made in a mold I would say, “No sweat, order your size or send in the measurements for your size.”  But, I can’t say that!  Every woman is different and just because you are a size 5 doesn’t mean that you have a size 5 waste…it could be a size 2 or 3 waste, and your hips can be that of a size 6.  You could be squeezing into a pair of pants or a dress that appears to fit all the right areas just fine yet, you had to have alterations, or the material has give.  This normally isn’t the case with a gown so don’t risk money over “Final Sale” which to my understanding all gowns are.  Be sure to check return policies before you purchase.

Mistake #2

It’s okay not to solicit advice from the bridal gown consultants. It’s your body, your style and you know what you like and what makes you feel good!

I asked for a particular style when I first walked in, and although it didn’t work for me I was given nothing but “suggestions” after that.  The consultant went away from my unique style and my body type.  Here I was early 30′s trying on something that looked like it was from the 30′s!

Mistake #3

Don’t take bratty little sisters,  or the rushed with you to try on your gown(s).  They will yell, “That’s the dress”, and you will walk away with an eggshell burlap sack that “is you in every way!”.

When in doubt, try it another day with someone else, another group of friends or family.  Or, make sure you have stopped for a bite and it is not around lunch or dinner time.

Mistake #4

Too many opinions causes too much confusion!

Originally, I was going with a simple white dress before I decided I wanted something simple and elegant.  This too could have worked, but I wanted to step it up a bit and decided on something that was more elegant, yet not too over the top.  The same people that said, “Why get a wedding gown…you’re already married had no clue about the style options available for brides.  Everyone just “assumed” I was going to walk down the isle with a big poofy ball gown!  When I didn’t the oohs and aahs as I walked down the isle were priceless.  Thank people for their opinions not to offend and state to them that you will take it into consideration and move on because if you linger you will waste precious time and a few good brain cells in the process.

Mistake #5

What rule says that you have to get it altered where you bought it?

None!  However, this is where policy gets tricky.  In the event that you purchase the gown and you have it altered somewhere other than the shop you purchased it.  The shop isn’t liable for anything past the point of purchase unless of course it is a defect in the material.  So, although it may save you big bucks taking it to your favorite seamstress don’t do so unless they too have a policy to replace at full cost your gown in the event of some unforeseen mishap.
