Who gets to give the wedding speech at the reception?

Traditionally, they are the father of the bride, the groom, and the best man.  The bride’s father usually gives his blessing to the newlyweds, give some words of advice to his new son-in-law or remark on their families joining through the couple’s union.

The groom is usually the next to speak, mainly because it is a reply to the previous speech made by his father-in-law. The speech normally includes his promise to his bride, his gratitude to his family and hers, and the guests who had shared in the celebration.

The best man’s speech is the last. It is always light hearted and funny, with amusing anecdotes about the groom. It usually ends with a wish for the newlyweds’ continuous happiness together.

It is not unusual, though, to have the maid of honor or a sister of the bride to give a speech as well.
